Event description:

On the occasion of 4th of July celebrations, why not we Chinese students gather together and enjoy the all-day event in the nation's capital, beginning with a parade along Constitution Avenue and ending with a spectacular display of fireworks over the Washington Monument.

*Public access to the National Mall begins at 10:00 a.m., with all visitors required to enter via a security checkpoint

Schedule

9:00 am We gather at the White House Visitor Center @ (1450 Pennsylvania Ave. NW), we will stay there until 10:45am and enjoy games, crafts and other activities celebrating America's Birthday. National Park Service rangers and volunteers will give you the opportunity to sample the sights, sounds, activities and personages that helped finalize the Declaration of Independence and create the United States of America on July 4, 1776. 10:50am we gonna enjoy the Smithsonian Folklife Festival @ National Mall, featuring daily and evening music and dance performances, crafts and cooking demonstrations, storytelling and discussions of cultural issues. The themes of the 2010 program will be: México Profundo: A Deeper Mexico, Asian Pacific American Connections and Smithsonian Inside Out. We will have lunch there and leave at 11:40pm For more info. 11:45pm we enjoy the parade and time is flexible, we can have a break then or rejoin the Festival @ National Mall until 5:00pm

Parade Route: Constitution Avenue and 7th to 17th Sts

6:00pm we gonna enjoy the concert on the Washington Monument Grounds. The U.S. Navy Band perfroms on the Southwest corner of the grounds of the Washington Monument. The concert includes the talents of the U.S. Navy Concert Band, the Sea Chanters chorus, and the Cruisers, their rock and top-40 ensemble. That portion ends at 7:30 p.m., to be followed by a vignette by the National Park Service. At 8:00 p.m., the Navy Band Commodores Jazz ensemble will perform with special guest Jane Monheit. This portion promptly concludes at 9:10 p.m. for the fireworks display.

Around 9:15 p.m. we watch the Fireworks on the National Mall

Public Transportation

Metrorail hours of operation on July 4th are from 7:00 a.m. to midnight. The Smithsonian Metro Station is closed all day on the 4th of July. Metro Stations near the National Mall include Federal Triangle, Metro Center, Gallery Place-Chinatown, Capitol South, L’Enfant Plaza, Federal Center SW, Archives-Navy Memorial, and Arlington National Cemetery.

Parking

Parking throughout the National Mall area will be extremely limited. Limited public parking will be available at the Pentagon’s North parking lot. Call (703) 697-6251 for more information.

Security Checkpoints

On the 4th of July all visitors must go through security checkpoints to enter the National Mall and areas along the George Washington Memorial Parkway. Coolers, backpacks, packages and persons will be subject to inspection. Possession and consumption of alcoholic beverages and the use of personal fireworks are prohibited. National Mall Checkpoints:

  • West entrance, or George Washington Memorial Parkway side of Memorial Bridge
  • Constitution Avenue and 23rd Street
  • Constitution Avenue and 17th Street
  • Constitution Avenue between 14th and 15th streets
  • Independence Avenue and 14th Street
  • Westside of 14th Street, at Jefferson Drive, SW
  • Westside of 14th Street, at Madison Drive, SW
  • Maine Avenue and Raoul Wallenberg Place, (Le. formerly 15th Street)

George Washington Memorial Parkway Checkpoints: (no access to National Mall)

  • Columbia Island/Lyndon Baines Johnson Memorial Grove
  • Gravelly Point, immediately north of National Airport
  • Washington Sailing Marina at Daingerfield Island
  • U.S. Marine Corps War Memorial and Netherlands Carillon
  • Memorial Circle (access to National Mall via Memorial Bridge restricted to pedestrians only)
